GOOD FOOD RETAIL

A national movement to make healthy, affordable and culturally appropriate food more accessible in convenience stores

MAKING HEALTHIER OPTIONS AFFORDABLE AND ACCESSIBLE

GOOD FOOD RETAIL is a national movement making healthier, affordable, and culturally appropriate food more accessible in independent convenience stores across the UK.

Founded in 2019 by local and retail experts Rice Marketing, it works across the food system—connecting local convenience stores, wholesalers & suppliers, councils, and policymakers—to build a powerful network for lasting change.

BREAKING THE CYCLE OF HEALTH INEQUALITY

Access to healthy food in the UK is incredibly unequal. Whether you can get healthier food at an affordable price depends on where you live.

For many people living on low incomes, the only available option is to shop in a local convenience store or local cultural foods store. However, often these stores stock fewer healthier options and charge higher prices. In areas with lower incomes, there are many unhealthy food options. This is because of a broken food system that pushes unhealthier food more than healthier options.

Our mission is simple: to break this cycle by making healthier food options more available in independent convenience stores, especially those serving low-income areas, who rely on them.

FOLLOWING THE EVIDENCE

The evidence is clear: if healthier products are available, they sell.

GOOD FOOD RETAIL brings together key players from across the food system to make healthier choices, especially in low-income areas.

  • Councils: Building GOOD FOOD RETAIL networks in underserved areas, supporting local shops with resources, advice, and free stock.

  • Wholesalers & Suppliers: Driving sales of healthier items through product placement and promotion. Ensuring healthier products are accessible, affordable and offer attractive margins to retailers.

  • Retailers: Improving healthier food options on their shelves and promoting it within their communities.

  • Policy Makers & Academics: Supporting Councils to support the uptake of GOOD FOOD RETAIL. Sharing evidence that supports the availability of healthier options in convenience stores.

Together, we’re transforming the food environment—one shelf at a time.

"To be remembered to be doing the right thing as a business owner in your local community...this speaks a thousand words.” — Atul Sodha, Ambassador Retailer

HEAR FROM OUR NETWORK

“We've got an obligation to our communities because the mission is there for people to want to be healthier. So when they're coming in, allow them to have that variety of product in your store rather than just a sugary treat. You start to stock these items. And the beauty of that is I'm a businessman at the end of it. And when you start seeing the till ringing it kind of initiates the feeling that you're doing the right thing.”

— Atul Sodha, Ambassador Retailer

“For many communities, the convenience store is the store. It is the place where you get your food. People can only eat what is on offer. They can only utilise the facilities that are there. So this whole project, what's critical, is shaping the environment that is out there for people to use.”

Andy Gold, Head of Food Strategy Newham Council

PROVIDING A PRACTICAL TOOLKIT

KNOWING THE HEALTHIER OPTIONS TO LIST

At the heart of the network is the Healthier 100 Lines Framework—a practical tool providing healthier product lines that meet the Nutrient Profiling Model (NPM) and are suitable for convenience stores. It supports retailers, wholesalers and suppliers to stock and promote healthier products—and it works within the system as it exists now.

It’s practical, scalable and designed for real-world change.

HELPING CONSUMERS MAKE HEALTHIER CHOICES

Our signature green shelf wobblers make healthier options easy to spot for families, children and the wider community—even if English isn't their first language.
